Real Men Mentor

We need YOU to put the men back in mentor!

Why is Mentoring Important?

Nearly one-third of the state’s youth live in single-parent households, the majority of these kids also lack the support, interaction and influence from positive adult men. There is a profound need for mentors for boys, last year 7 in 10 kids referred for mentoring were boys and only 2 in 10 mentor applicants were men.

Youth with mentors reported:

  • 46% were less likely to use drugs
  • 27% were less likely to use alcohol
  • 32% were less likely to initiate violence
  • 52% were less likely to skip school

Who will I mentor?

We work with youth grades 1 thru 12 who have an absent parent or who are on juvenile probation, our staff works hard to pair you with a boy who has similar interest and hobbies, in a neighborhood close to your home or work, and that fits within the age group you want to work with.

Do I have time to be a mentor?

Mentoring is simple, you just hang out for an hour with a great kid doing stuff you already do or want to do like: playing video games, playing sports, going for a bike ride, going fishing, watching a ball game, building a model truck, or anything else men like you enjoy doing!

Mentors meet with their youth weekly for one hour for six months to one year. The goal of the mentoring relationship is that you and your youth will form a lasting bond long beyond the scope of our program.

What will I do as a mentor?

Play sports together. Go on a hike. Read books. Eat a pizza with extra anchovies. Or just give some advice and inspiration. Whatever it is you enjoy, odds are you’ll enjoy it even more with your mentee—and you’ll be making a life-changing impact.

Do I need experience to be a mentor?

No. Simply showing up, having fun and trying new things is all that is needed!

What do I have to do to get started?

All you need to do is fill out an application, participate in an interview and complete mentor training. Mentor trainings are held monthly, depending on when you submit your application, you can expect to be mentoring within 30-45 days from your interview.
