Mid Valley Mentors hosts 5k & Fun Run/Walk Fundraiser at Salem’s Riverfront Park October 16
Portland General Electric, Wells Fargo and NW Natural show support for mentoring as presenting sponsors of the first annual fundraiser.
Salem, OR – October 5, 2010 – Mid Valley Mentors, a community-driven non-profit agency providing mentor services to Marion and Polk Counties announces its 1st annual 5k & Fun Run/Walk fundraiser taking place at Salem’s Riverfront Park, 9:00 am on Saturday October 16, 2010. Portland General Electric, Wells Fargo and NW Natural each signed on as presenting sponsors of the first annual fundraiser, showing tremendous support for
Mid Valley Mentors’ programs serving individuals affected by incarceration in our community.
“We recruit volunteers to be mentors for one hour a week,” explains Sarah Spinks, Executive Director of
Mid Valley Mentors. “What better way to gain interest from our community than to host a family friendly, fitness focused event? We are hoping this fundraiser will give our community an opportunity to connect and exercise together while raising awareness for our programs and the community’s need for volunteer mentors.”
Willamette University College of Law’s Class of 2012 has registered as a team to show support as Mid Valley Mentors provides mentors for adults and youth affected by incarceration. Alexis Young, mentor with Mid Valley Mentors and member of the WUCL’s Class of 2012 explains, “As future attorneys I think it is our responsibility to get involved with issues like these and understand the impact incarceration has on the community as a whole. There is a great need in this community and we must work together to reduce recidivism and reduce the effects of trans-generational criminality.”
Participants are welcome to run with leashed dogs and strollers. 5k male and female winners in the following categories will receive medals: 12 & Under, 13-16, 17-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+. The non-competitive Fun Run/Walk is 1.5 miles, begins near the 5k start and ends near the 5k finish. Every participant will receive a race t-shirt and enjoy snacks and entertainment after the event.
