Just wanted to thank all the sponsers and volunteers for all there hard work to put on such a great and warming event. I run “alot” of races and this one I will remember. Everyone was so personable and all wore big smiles on there face even early when the temperature outside was very cold. Thanks again!!!!!!! Vince

Spirit Mountain Community Fund awards mentors

Spirit Mountain Community Fund recently announced that it has awarded $5,000 to Mid Valley Mentors.
The grant aids the development of evidence-based mentoring capacity for MVM’s Juvenile Enrichment through Mentoring, which serves Marion and Polk counties youth ages 4 through 18 who are affected by incarceration. This grant will help Mid Valley Mentors continue to focus on its mission to recruit mentor volunteers.

Community Fund officials noted that the grant comes at a time when community needs to support at-risk youth is at a crucial time, adding that the Center on Juvenile Justice reported in August that current economic conditions have impacted crime rates nationwide.
“Cases of reported runaway youth have been rising, stemming directly from the current crisis,” the Community Fund announcement noted. “Several reports have noted that children will be negatively affected by the recession as it will increase the likelihood that they will be living under the poverty level, which in turn may increase the likelihood of doing poorly in school and dropping out, which in turn often leads to crime.”

I am a student at Argosy University Online. I am going after my BA in Psychology, from there I will go for my Masters. My reason for taking psychology is to be able to reach out to the youth, guide them and let them know they aren’t alone. I come from the same place a lot of them are in or similar situations. I have been through treatment a few times, been on my own since I was 15 years of age. I have turned my life around, I have been spiritually up-lifted and Blessed. I believe in cognitive therapy, and I want to share my positive attitude, experience, and my time with the youth, to give to them someone who genuinely cares about them, I want to be the sounding board they may need, I enjoy activities and fun, every thing from arts and crafts to biking, hiking, swimming, walking, talking, listening, and I enjoy making stained glass . My biggest downfall is that it has taken so long to get to where I’m at now. I’ve got 15 months clean and sober, and I would like the opportunity to give of myself, please let me know what I should do. Thank you, Varla Barney.
