| Alma Ruvalcaba JEM Case Manager Phone: (503) 584-4805 |
Hi. My name is Alma Ruvalcaba; I’m the JEM Case Manager. I started working at Mid Valley Mentors in June 2009. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Minor in Chican@ Studies from Western Oregon University. I chose to major in Psychology and minor in Chican@ Studies because my career goals are to work in the Social Service field advocating for the advancement of youth and disadvantaged minority groups. That is precisely why all of my work experience is with nonprofit or social service organizations.
While still at WOU, I did a practicum at Mano a Mano, a nonprofit agency that provides social services to community members, primarily consisting of Spanish-speaking clients. My responsibilities included: gathering information to determine client eligibility for programs and services, translate documents, assist clients in completion of documents, and coordinate services with other agencies based on needs of clients.
I also took part in a Latino Mentor Program at WOU. I taught English to Oregon State Penitentiary Latino inmates. I coordinated with classmates to evaluate level of fluency of inmates and implement lesson plans. The purpose of the program was to help Latinos successfully re-enter into the workforce and society.
Prior to working at Mid Valley Mentors, I was a youth organizer for Latinos Unidos Siempre. I led workshops and assisted in development of action plans relative to lobbying, voter registration, public speaking, political campaigns, and youth empowerment. My focus was to help youth develop life skills related to academics, family life, and social interactions. I informed students about college entrance requirements and procedures; and collaborated with parents to ensure students attained educational goals.
I’m super exited to have the privilege to work for Mid Valley Mentors. That said, I just have one question; do you want to be a mentor?
